Sligo Goal has an intense amount of dark history packed into the walls, from public hangings and hard manual labour to prison breaks and German spies during WWII. Although the shape of the original building is intriguing, with multiple circular shapes and arches, my first thought was that the building deserves hope. My design keeps the original structure and preserves the history, but also incorporates hope and light into the hotel. My idea is to add a sanctuary, an outdoor haven filled with light and positive energy for those that need that in their lives. Balloons, suspension and the sensation of floating are used to create playful scenes that celebrate light and hope, to alleviate the dark history imbedded in the building.
